Members of our GMA Design Group interior design team traveled to the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City to observe a critical piece of legislation being reviewed by the House of Representatives. The bill in question seeks to grant Registered Interior Designers the ability to independently stamp and seal their own non-structural permit drawings—an essential step toward recognizing the full scope and expertise of our profession.

Currently, Missouri law requires interior designers to work under a licensed architect or engineer to submit permit drawings. This regulation poses challenges for design firms and independent practitioners who are fully qualified to handle interior, non-loadbearing work but are limited by outdated legislative frameworks.

Some of our team members are actively involved in the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), specifically the Gateway Chapter, which plays a key role in advocating for the profession at the state and national levels. IIDA is a professional organization that supports commercial interior designers through education, networking, and legislative efforts. Their advocacy work is instrumental in advancing legislation like this, which elevates the role of interior designers in shaping safe, functional, and inspiring spaces.

Backed by IIDA Gateway, this proposed legislation aims to modernize the definition and practice of interior design in Missouri. It provides clarity around scope, establishes standards for independent stamping authority, and recognizes the high level of training and responsibility held by NCIDQ-certified professionals. Just as architects are licensed to safeguard the public through thoughtful design and technical expertise, Registered Interior Designers should be trusted within their clearly defined scope.

At its core, this is about accountability, safety, and recognition. By allowing qualified interior designers to practice to the full extent of their education and experience, we enhance the integrity of the built environment and give consumers greater protection and confidence in the professionals they hire.

We are proud to support this bill and to stand with our peers in advocating for a stronger, clearer future for interior design in Missouri.
